Abstract:
【Objectives】 To explore innovative solutions for the mainstreaming of biodiversity conservation with the participation of the whole society, and provide guidance and suggestions for the further application of NbS to enhance biodiversity. 【Methods】 By discussing the relationships between Nature-based Solutions (NbS) and biodiversity conservation, this article introduced pathways and case studies that NbS support biodiversity conservation from three dimensions: protecting the intact natural ecosystems, restoring degraded ecosystems, and sustainably managing productive lands. Suggestions on further adopting NbS to conserve biodiversity were provided. 【Results】 This article showed that NbS, built upon biodiversity conservation, emphasized protecting, restoring, and sustainably managing ecosystems and their services. By linking biodiversity with multiple societal challenges through ecosystem services, NbS could help integrate biodiversity into economic and social sectors and policies, avoiding the marginalization of biodiversity issues. This approach can increase awareness of biodiversity among a broader audience and mobilize financial, commercial, and social forces to participate in large-scale NbS actions. 【Conclusions】 The widespread application of NbS contributed to mainstreaming biodiversity conservation in various sectors, such as agriculture, water resource management, infrastructure development, public health, and urban-rural planning, accelerating the process of sustainable transition. Therefore, NbS played a crucial role in biodiversity conservation.
